Global Talent Search Winners

The winners of Lilla Rogers' Global Talent Search - Round 1 - were announced today.
No, I'm not in the group.
Yes, I am very sad.
But, part of my brain is a teeeeeeeny bit relieved since I can't imagine how I would have found time to do the second and final challenge since it is getting a bit busy here in my studio. Sometimes (always?) the Universe has other plans...

Another part of my brain is feeling incredible sympathy for Lilla - she had to choose 50 semi-finalists from over 1500 entries. Eeegads! I have a hard enough time choosing from your entries for the Tangle Card Challenges!! (BTW - I will post this week's later today)

If you would like to see the beautiful pieces that were selected for the Global Talent Search - Round 1 - you can see them all at Lilla's blog, HERE. Just scroll down a bit in the post to see the pics.

And I will console myself by posting my entry here and you all can tell me how I should have won and deserved to win... I'll believe it all, gratefully. :-) hee hee
[If you say I suck and should get a real job - I will delete you! Aaaahhhhaahaahhaaaa!]
No, seriously, I was very happy with the work I did and will find a way to produce it for real.

The challenge/assignment was to create a journal for the company Paperchase incorporating vintage playground equipment, in any way we wished. In any medium or style. And it had to have the word "Journal."

Ok, here is what I created...

I created the girl and the label using Inktense pencils. I drew the the playground elements in black colored pencil on lined paper, tore the hole in the paper, and scanned it. I added the colored crayon bits on the computer and then layered it all together. It took about three days. I should show you what the original image looked like before I got some great feedback from Sherry London, a fellow classmate and a "Photoshop Expert and a Bead and Fiber Artist"...
First draft...

I had been working towards a chalkboard kind of look...

anyway - I really liked the final journal and I will let you know if I make some "real" ones!

One last bit of Universe-y stuff... normally, I would have found out I didn't win in the usual way - I would have looked at the site and discovered I was not included. As usual. But I had such a wonderfully distracting day yesterday, that I had actually managed to forget that all my hopes for my future rested on today's announcement! So when I sat down at my computer, I looked first at my email. And there was one from a fellow student offering commiseration because she hadn't been picked either. That IS a great way to find out you have lost something... but the student was Judith Moffat who is an incredible illustrator and has written a gajillion books. Somehow, getting the news from HER and that even SHE didn't get selected... seriously, can you see how that took the edge off?

My only feeling of regret concerning this project, right now, is that I don't have a real swing like that in my own backyard. :-)

  1. ((((((((((Hugs)))))))))) to you, Sandy!
Your notebook design is darling. It is friendly and inviting and playful.
I love the original version, too.
The outcome of this endeavor just the universe's way of noting that that you have other things that require your time and attention and immense talent!

    1. Thank you! And you are right. I have no idea where I am going, but a rep is probably not part of it... for now anyway.

  2. I do not know who judged and selected the 50 finalists however I adore your journal cover. There is something so youthful and blissful about swinging! We need never get too old to play. Happy Hearts are Creative Hearts...

    1. Thank you. I am trying to understand about living in the moment. :-)

  3. After looking at the other journal covers, I have to conclude that I like yours better than any of them. You did deserve to win and you should have won.......what were they thinking?

    1. Oh thank you thank you! Whether it's true or not, it sure feels good to hear that! :-D

  4. She was wrong. But when you narrow 1,500 down to just 1, well, okay. But putting aside our affection for you and getting down to brass tacks- you really need to take that book to the stationery trade show and push it anyway. Because LR is not the only player in town. That book is marketable and in your heart you know it. The next show is May 18-21, 2014. Plenty of time to add to the collection. DO IT.

  5. I read your post, saw your work, looked at the 50 winning entries.....and I'm so confused! I don't want to say anything negative about the other entires, but if I had to choose a book that I would buy, it would be your front cover that I would definitely choose. I've always loved your work and I am drawn to your style. Their post talked of helping people make their art marketable but I found many of the chosen ones just too busy. Oops, I said something negative didn't I? Well it's just my opinion. :D

  6. I admit I find it a bit confusing too.... I have always understood that I live in an alternate reality, so the stuff that appeals to me, doesn't always appeal to the powers that be. Sometimes... the right person has faith in me and takes a risk. And then life is good. :-)

And thank you for liking my work. I draw to please. hee hee. :-)

  7. Like many others, I looked at all the 50 entries chosen. Many were good, some very good, but others, IMHO, were not so good. I guess that's why I'm not a judge.... In my honest and truthful and unbiased opinion, I say that your entry should have been included. And you didn't pay me to say that either!

  8. I'm not just saying this to make you feel better, but I was an art director for many years and I can't tell one artist from another in this selection. Except for 3-4 winners, they all look the same.
I like Lilla Rogers, but all of us like the stuff that is most like our own and you can really tell what Lilla likes!

Your journal cover is wonderful AND it says Sandy Steen Bartholomew strong as can be. You have a wonderful illustration style and I would never want to see you change it to fit any niche!
