This week's Tangle comes from THE BOOK. Flutter Tile is a great grid pattern with a lot of room for variations. I'd love to see what you do with it!
The WCANH Round-Robin Challenge is almost finished. I haven't gotten my own book back yet (it's been a whole year since I've seen it!!), but I just finished my last two books. The first of them had a string that was kind of like a "W" with a rounded section in the middle. So I reflected the W on the 1st and 3rd page, and reflected the W - up and down- on the center page. As you see, I used Flutter Tile for the background. This tangle takes... rather a while... to fill in all the black spaces. So I don't recommend it to the very impatient tangler!
The second book (and my very last one!) had the "Eye of Horus" as the string. The book's owner asked us to use color and, overall, the book is really impressive. I mean, I adore Egypt. But I don't think the book works as traditional Zentangle. The color is really distracting and the tangles themselves get obscured. That said, I had fun "illustrating". I decided to go with a more traditional Egyptian look and I put all my tangles in the background. I like to color and I love the way this looks. But I don't think it really counts as a Zentangle. What do you all think? (About this piece and also about color in Zentangles?)
Love this tangle - and the eye!! May have to give one of these a try!!!
ReplyDeleteLove your post. This past weekend was a Zentangle weekend for me. Hop over to my blog and see them. One looks kind of like a rhino LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm very naughty. I love Zentangling in black and white and shades of gray, but I love adding in color too. It does change how you see the work (tone, feeling, reflection). I think playing with two versions can be fun, one with color and one without.
ReplyDeleteOMG - I just did this tangle this weekend - it's a pattern I've woodburned a lot on my gourds so decided to recreate it as a tangle. It's so versatile - can shade the black in different places for a completely different look. To have used it this weekend and then to find it here as the Tangle of the week - Too Funny
ReplyDeleteThanks for flutter. I like the ease of black and white, no decisions to make. Sometimes I like to add a small amount of colour especially if it is for the children. I wonder if, as you grow with art you can't help be creative and add colour. I absolutely love yours.
ReplyDeleteAnother yummy tangle, thank you! I do like the colour page too, but I agree - it moves the tangle to being a background element. Still cool!
ReplyDeleteLove those tennie boppers. Wish they came in some kind of clog tennis shoe. Love them!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you see a difference between using color instead of black (so it's still essentially monotone), and the kind of color you used on that Egyptian piece? It seems that one of the issues in adding color is that you spend time thinking about where to use what color, instead of just getting into a zone. Even if you add all the color afterwards, it moves the act from mellow and meditative to ... something else.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I must say that I got your little alpha book the other day and I love it. Loved the little goodies too. Now as for your question on color. I totally agree the black and white is truly a zen zentangle. After all isn't it about the simplicity of it all? Having said that, one of the things that was in my package with my book was a tiny bookmark that I am using with my book. On it was a zentangle that had some colored pencils on it with a tiny bit of color. I thought that was great. But it was still 90% or more black and white.
ReplyDeleteA truly traditional zentangle--no. More zentangle integrated or zendoodle. Most of my work falls into that category, but half the time I call it zentangled, because that's the word used elsewhere, most of the time.
ReplyDeleteI think the word 'zentangle' itself is a little like 'raptor'. Most people used to think eagle or hawk. Nowadays half the people think dinosaur.
But isn't that the nature of art? No sooner is a form established then artists will look for ways to take it to new levels. Maybe we should start assigning different labels-- Zentangle Traditional and Zentangle Noveau, etc, lol!
I like the illustration and I believe that what speaks to you at the time is the most important thing. True, most people look at zentangle as black and white art - expression, whatever. I like color and many of my tangles are monochromatic with just white and a color. What flows from your heart is the thing, be it bursts of color or simple black and white. Keep on puttin it out there.
ReplyDeleteI love the Egypt Book and I am not aware that the tangles get lost in the color.
